The 2nd Annual Newtown Breakaways Women’s Pre-season “AFLX” Challenge  Sunday 15th March 2020 and for the first time at Henson Park Marrickville thanks to the Inner-West Council.

9 Clubs / 13 Teams / 2 Pools / 26 Games / 4 Preliminary Finals / 2 Grand Finals – Community Women’s AFL at its best.  Club participants included:

  • Bathurst Giants
  • Newtown Breakaways
  • Parramatta Goannas
  • Randwick City Saints
  • Southern Power
  • St George AFL
  • UTS AFC
  • Western Magic
  • Wollongong Saints

The Pre-season Challenge has been developed in response to a need for clubs to secure competitive pre-season trial games to test and promote players in a game environment that is beyond clubs internal training.  The Breakaways were pleased to work closely with AFL Sydney and devised the AFLX format to ensure maximum game time participation by clubs in the event.

We thank the Inner West Council, AFL Sydney, ISC Sportswear, Salisbury Hotel and Young Henry’s for sponsorship support .

The Challenge event is designed to encourage comradery between teams while still engaging in competitive football.  The major Covid-19 Virus response meant an early challenge but 9 Clubs chose overwhelmingly to participate and only 2 clubs (3 teams) chose not to participate in the competition.  In compensation the weather could have been kinder but the facilities at Henson such as the historic grand stand meant all clubs and players remained dry between games.

Newtown Breakaways are looking forward to the the 2020 Season and extend the Pre-season Challenge for 2021 …
